Nairobi County approves school feeding policy to make ‘Dishi Na County’ permanent

Under the new policy, the county plans to draft a School Feeding Bill to provide statutory backing, ring-fence funds in the budget, and establish a dedicated School Meals Unit to manage logistics and quality control. Coverage is also expected to expand to at least 20 additional schools in informal settlements by the next school term, with plans to increase the number of kitchens from 17 to 69 to achieve citywide coverage.

Governor Johnson Sakaja highlighted that the policy ensures no learner will be turned away due to the inability to pay the token meal contribution.

“A hungry child cannot learn. By securing school meals in law, we are securing the future workforce and leadership of this city,” he said.

The move gives long-term legal and financial support to the initiative, which since its launch in 2023 has grown to serve over 316,000 learners daily across more than 230 public primary schools and ECDE centres through 17 central kitchens.
