Nairobi County Government to construct affordable houses for residents

The Nairobi County government is set to break ground for the construction of Phase I of the Ksh300 billion Urban Renewal project.

The project entails the construction of affordable housing for residents of Nairobi by constructing new houses in place of the old ones.

The first Phase set to begin in July this year will include construction of new houses in Old and New Ngara, Pangani, Jeevanjee/ Bachelors, Ngong Road Inspectorate staff quarters, Uhuru and Suna Road.

Other estates targeted are Bahati, Mbotela, Ziwani, Makongeni, Kaloleni, Jericho and Shauri Moyo, where old houses will be demolished and redeveloped to accommodate more home buyers, according to Housing Director Marion Rono.

The second phase of Urban renewal will be undertaken in Eastlands where over 100,000 housing units will be developed. This is superseded by planning and feasibility of the entire Eastlands area to accommodate other land uses.

County Executive for Housing and Urban Renewal Tom Odongo said discussions have already taken place between the county officials and utility providers including Nairobi Water, Kenya Power and cabling companies to ensure collaboration in the execution of the project.

Commenting on the project, Nairobi City County Governor Dr Evans Kidero assured residents that no one will be displaced in the development of projects.

“Nairobi City County cannot and will not evict or forcibly remove tenants from their houses.  What the county government is simply doing is increasing housing provision without interfering with the occupation of existing tenants,” said Kidero.

“Current residents will be able to buy or rent a new unit when they are built at a concessionary rate, which will improve their quality of living immeasurably.”

The planning phase is being supported by the World Bank, AFD and Sida under the Nairobi Metropolitan Services Improvement Programme (NaMSIP).
