Nairobi court detains suspected spies arrested taking photos

A Nairobi court has allowed police to detain two foreigners who were arrested in the country for engaging in suspected terror activities.

The Anti-Terror Police Unit had sought for 10 days to have Gull Mohammed Irfan and Husen Shaahed remain in custody pending conclusion of investigations, but the court granted five days.

According to police, the two foreigners believed to be Pakistani nationals, have been pretending to hawk clothes in Narumoru area, Nyeri County, while taking pictures of churches and schools in the area.

“We believe that the two are on a spying mission to mark their target areas, Your Honor, and we need time to investigate further,” submitted the Investigating Officer.

The court heard that, at the time of the alleged hawking, the two did not have work permits and the Immigration Department was yet to determine whether they have valid VISAs to stay in Kenya.

The two were arraigned before Senior Resident Magistrate Elector Riany under miscellaneous applications.

The court allowed their detention for five days after they objected to an application by the Investigation Officer to hold them for 10 days.

The case will be mentioned on Friday July 27, 2018 for the investigation team to decide whether the two will be charged or not.
