Nairobi MCAs approve all ten Sonko’s nominees

The Nairobi County Assembly Wednesday evening approved Governor Mike Sonko’s 10 county executive nominees who are now set to be sworn in next week.

The Nairobi County Assembly MCAs unanimously certified the vetting report from the Appointments Committee led by Speaker Beatrice Elachi.

The report states that all the nominees satisfy the requirements of Chapter 6 of the Constitution of Kenya on leadership and integrity.

The committee recommended the Assembly approves all the names, saying the nominees met constitutional and statutory requirements.  It said Sonko observed the two-thirds gender rule, ethnic and regional balance. The nominees include seven men and three women.

Speaking after the approval of the nominees, Nairobi County Assembly Majority leader Abdi Guyo called on the nominees to deliver on their promises or face sanctions from the Assembly.

Top on the list is Media Council of Kenya Chairman Charles Kerich, who has been serving as editor-in-chief at the Star newspaper will take his new role as the Minister in charge of Information Communication Technology and E-Government.

Another long-time journalist, Larry Wambua, who previously worked at the State broadcaster, Kenya Broadcasting Corporation will take up Devolution, Public Service, and Administration docket.

Other nominees include Veska Jepkemboi (Finance and Economic Planning), Peter Wachira (Lands, Urban Renewal and Housing), Dr Hitan Majevda (Health Services), Allan Esabwa (Commerce, Tourism and Cooperatives), Emmah Muthoni (Environment, Water, Energy and Natural Resources).

Others include Danvas Makori (Agriculture, Livestock Development, Fisheries and Forestry), Janet Ouko (Education, Youth Gender, Sports, Culture and Social Services) and Saleh Mohammed (Road, Infrastructure and Transport).

Meanwhile, the swearing in ceremony for the nominees that was to take place on Thursday has been pushed to next week. “Preparations for the event are still in place that’s why we postponed today’s (Thursday) event, said Sonko when contacted.
