Woman hospitalised after conductor pushes her out of moving matatu on Thika Road
A family in Zimmerman, Nairobi is seeking justice for their
kin who sustained serious injuries after being pushed out of a moving matatu
following an argument with the conductor over bus fare.
Hanah Waiganjo sustained injuries on the head and hands following
the incident that occurred on Tuesday at Roysambu area.
According to the family, the victim told them that she was
heading to the Nairobi City Centre but when she asked the conductor to drop her
off at Thika Road Mall (TRM), which is a few kilometres away, an argument ensued
over the amount she was supposed to pay.
“Alituambia kwamba alikuwa anaomba ashukishwe TRM… huyo
conductor akamwambia hapa huezi lipa hiyo pesa, basi akamwambia ju nimekupa
pesa, kata pesa yako unipatie change. Hata
hakumpea change, akamrusha gari ikiwa kwa kasi akaanguka akapata majeraha
mabaya ...,” says Cecilia Njoki, a family member.
After the woman fell out of the matatu, the conductor is
reported to have fled the scene but passengers demanded that the driver takes
the woman to Uhai Neema Hospital which is nearby. After the
woman was taken into the hospital, the driver attempted to flee but was blocked
by the guards at the hospital.
"Huyo driver alikuwa anataka kukimbia wakazuiliwa na
management wasiendee kabla hawajajua hali ya mgonjwa. Kabla hawajaondoka ndio
my uncle akaja akajulisha polisi hiyo gari ndio imemgonga na polisi wakachukua
gari ikapelekwa Kasarani Police Station,” added Cecilia Njoki.
Due the serious injuries she had sustained, medical officers
at the facility recommended that she be transferred to St. Peter's Orthopaedic,
Muthiga where she is currently admitted.
"Jana ndio alitoka theatre, alifungwa mkono, amepigwa
picha ya kichwa ako na deep cut kwa kichwa na tumbo,” said Njoki.
According to Njoki, what is worrying to them is that the
vehicle involved in the incident was released from the police station and the suspect
is yet to be apprehended.
"Sasa hatujui imeachiliwa on which ground ... Kama sisi
familia ya Anne tunataka haki ipatikane kwa sababu akirushwa nje ya gari hakuwa
na makosa,” she says.
True to Njoki’s word, when Citizen Digital visited Zimmerman
area, we spotted the vehicle going on with business as usual.
Kasarani Police Commander Muthoni Wahome said the vehicle
was impounded but was released after undergoing a security check. According to
the police boss, the driver of the matatu, Boniface Mwangi who had been
arrested was released on a Ksh.10,000 police bond.
The Kasarani Police Commander said they are waiting for the victim to record an official statement on the incident for further action.
