Nakuru County Assembly passes Ward Development Bill

The Nakuru County Assembly finally passed the Ward Development Fund Bill 2014 on Wednesday.

Should Governor Lee Kinyanjui assent to the bill, it means that each ward will be allocated its own development fund which will cater for sports, youth affairs and the welfare of persons living with disability.

The fund will be managed by a Ward Management Committee which will be chaired by the area Member of County Assembly (MCA).

The bill was drafted by the county’s first assembly but was never passed as MCAs indicated that they needed to consult further on the matter.

According to County Speaker, Joel Maina Kairo, the fund will go a long way in making sure that each ward meets its development demands.

“If the governor assents to the bill it means that with MCAs concentrating on the smaller projects, the governor will now initiate flagship projects in each of the 55 wards,” said the County Assembly Speaker.

Deputy Speaker Samuel Tunoi and House Majority Leader Stanley Karanja said that the fund will ensure balance of development in all the wards in the county.

“In politics it is normal for some areas to feel discriminated when development projects are being rolled out. This fund will effectively put an end to that,” said Mr. Tunoi.
