Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui says politicians behind violent Matatu strikes

Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui has hit out at “influential persons running criminal-like enterprises” in the Matatu sub-sector.

Speaking outside his office, Kinyanjui said his administration has been trying to engage the sector players without success as they have kept off planned meetings.

“We can’t run this country like it has no planning, some criminal enterprises are being used to cause confusion and disturb the processes”, he said.

He added that the county government will continue to engage the business community who have been benefiting from the matatu stages to find alternatives.

While maintaining that Matatus will not be allowed into the Central Business District (CBD), the county boss said operators just like any other sector are not immune to new government planning and there is a need for them to abide by the set rules.

He has said that the County Government has already set aside Ksh.100M to build a new terminus.

Governor Kinyanjui said work was yet to begin as the government land had been grabbed by the political elite who were now inciting the Matatus sector stakeholders to picket.

At the same time, he claimed that the rioting youths were not matatu stakeholders but hired goons who are well-known by security agents.
