Nakuru launches Ksh 1.5B slums upgrade project
The first phase of the 1.5 billion shilling World Bank project that seeks to rehabilitate four informal settlements in Naivasha, Nakuru County has kicked-off after a 5 year delay.
Speaking at the launch of the project in Kihoto Estate, Naivasha, Governor Kinuthia Mbugua said that the project dubbed Kenya Informal Settlement Improvement Program (KISIP) will target Tarumbeta, Kamere, Kihoto and Karagita estates which are home to hundreds of flower farm workers.
Mbugua said that 1.2 billion shillings would go towards road improvement, 142 million shillings to water and 85 million shillings towards street lighting in the four estates.
The project hit a hiatus after the County Government of Nakuru was accused of not allocating development funds to the four estates and a contract belonging to one contractor rehabilitating roads, sewers and street lighting systems was terminated over financial woes.
According to the World Bank, the objective of the Informal Settlements Improvement Program Project is to improve living conditions in informal settlements in selected municipalities in Kenya.
