Nakuru
town will on Wednesday be designated into a city by President Uhuru Kenyatta,
becoming the fourth metropolis in Kenya.
The
town will join Nairobi, Nakuru and Kisumu to become the only conferred cities
in the country.
The
announcement was made by President Kenyatta, at what is assumed to be his
last State of the Nation address before his retirement, at Parliament Grounds.
“I
will tomorrow have the high privilege of conferring to Nakuru Municipality the
City Status. This is as a result of devolution and with its reputation as East
Africa's cleanest town, all of Kenya looks forward to Nakuru city,” the Head of
State said in his address on Tuesday.
Nakuru was first endorsed for city status on June 3, 2018, following the Senate’s decision to bump up its municipality status. 38 senators voted to have the city's status elevated, whereas two opposed.
