Nandi Governor Stephen Sang a no-show in court in Ksh.2M case

The hearing of a case against Nandi Governor Stephen Sang was on Monday postponed after a Kisumu court was informed that the Governor was had fallen ill.

Jane Masai, his lawyer, told the Magistrate Court that her client was unable to attend court because on fears that he had been exposed to COVID0-19.

According to Masai, the Governor has been ill recently and has been advised to spend seven days in isolation.

Resident Magistrate Beryl Omolo granted the defendants’ request for a case adjournment and ordered a hearing in two weeks to confirm the Governor’s health status.

Governor Sang was charged again early this year in connection with a raid on the Kibware Tea Estate in 2019.

He is accused of attacking Jonah Kemboi with a blunt object, causing injury to his neck and bruises to both lower limbs.

Sang is also charged with malicious damage to property and incitement to violence after destroying Ksh. 2 million worth of tea bushes in Kibware Estate.

In June 2019, while cutting the tea bushes, the governor said that he was responding to citizen concerns that the four acres of land set aside for the establishment of public utilities had been taken.

“Acting on public grievances and establishing ownership of land kept in trust for the public by the county, today I led the community in the recovery of four acres of land set aside for the establishment of public utilities,” he said.

The governor dismissed any of the charges brought against him and has been out on bail.
