Nanyuki principal on the spot after student dies under unclear circumstances

A Nanyuki principal and 10 others have been questioned by police after a 19-year-old student died under unclear circumstances on Friday.

Oliver Minishi, his deputy, four teachers and two county education officers have already recorded their statements with the police.

It is reported that the student, identified as Joel Ichatha, fell sick and was rushed to the hospital where he was hospitalized and later released on Thursday evening.

However, he reportedly fell ill again on Friday morning and was rushed to the hospital only to be pronounced dead.

According to Laikipia County Police Commander Simon Kipkeu, investigations have been launched to establish what may have caused his death.

This comes barely two weeks after Education CS Amina Mohamed cautioned schools and teachers against holding holiday tuition, warning of consequences to those found  defying the order.

“The management of all schools is accordingly advised against holding any holiday tuition as this is in contravention of Section 37 of the Basic Education Act that outlaws the practice,” said the CS.
