The Gender Violence Recovery Centre (GVRC) of the Nairobi Women’s Hospital on Wednesday opened a new children’s ward at the facility’s Hurlingham branch with financial support from the Australian High Commission.
Speaking during the opening ceremony, the GVRC Executive Director Alberta Wambua said the facility comes at a time when the hospital was struggling to handle 3,500 survivors of gender-based violence of which 40% are children with girls consisting of the majority.
The new paediatric ward will cater to all child-related health matters and boasts of 11 full beds, baby cots and ample playground.
Australian High Commissioner to Kenya John Feakes, Kilimani’s OCPD Peter Katam and the Deputy County Commissioner (Kibera) attended the opening ceremony.
