No fallout in Jubilee over Nairobi governorship seat Senator Sonko

Nairobi Senator Mike Sonko has downplayed fears of eventual fallout in Jubilee Party over nominations for the Nairobi governorship candidature.

Speaking at a Jubilee Party rally held at Mlango Kubwa in Mathare on Sunday, Senator Sonko said that the nomination battle for the seat is an internal affair that will be settled by party nominations slated for next year.

“There are very many people in Nairobi who are looking for the governorship seat. Let us not gamble with the position and allow Kidero to be re-elected,” said Senator Sonko.

“I would like to declare here in Mathare that Nominated MP Johnson Sakaja, Bishop Margaret Wanjiru, Dagoretti South MP Dennis Waweru and Water Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa – all who have declared interest in the seat, belong to Jubilee and would support a single candidate.”

Senator Sonko noted that should he lose the nomination to any of the aspirants, he would back their candidature, while calling on his fellow aspirants to support him should he beat them in the race.

“There are many positions in Jubilee. Should I lose in the nominations, I will go to State House and be a show shiner for President Uhuru Kenyatta,” stated Sonko amid applause from the party supporters.

“We do not want internal wrangles; we should be able to defend each other and the government against the opposition.”

He further noted that Mathare is a Jubilee zone, saying they would marshal the support needed to win Nairobi’s top seat.

In their speeches, Sakaja and Bishop Wanjiru accused Governor Kidero of enlisting the support of Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho in the organisation of the ODM rally at Masinde Muliro Grounds in Mathare.

“It is surprising that Kidero, who is the governor for Nairobi, cannot organise his own rally without getting support from Hassan Joho, who does not understand Nairobi politics,” said Bishop Margaret Wanjiru.

Sakaja noted: “It is pretentious for Joho to campaign for Kidero in Nairobi and yet his own backyard is in shambles. They should know that Jubilee has taken over Nairobi.”

The race for the Nairobi seat is set to be a tightly contested affair with the major hurdle for both Jubilee and CORD aspirants being in the nomination process.

ODM is also set to hold its party primaries next year with the party’s Executive Director Oduor Ong’wen last week allaying fears of favouritism in the nomination process.

This came after Nairobi Governor Evans Kidero spoke of a plot by a section of leaders at Orange House to ensure he does not win the party ticket.

Prior to the rally, Sonko traversed Mathare engaging with residents of the constituency and offering financial support to women and youth in the area.
