NPSC concludes vetting 12 candidates for Deputy IG position
The National Police Service Commission (NPSC)
has concluded vetting 12 candidates who were shortlisted for the position of
Deputy Inspector General in charge of regular police.
The position, which fell vacant following the
retirement of Deputy Inspector General Edward Mbugua, attracted 30 senior
officers before they were shortlisted to a dozen.
The commission Chair Eliud Kinuthia hinted on
what exactly the NPSC will be looking for in the officers on the hot seat,
saying; “a competent officer with
leadership capabilities who can convince us and the President that you can
command a service of 75,000 people.”
Among those who presented themselves for
vetting were Dr. Vincent Makokha, the current Director of Chaplaincy and Psycho
Social Support, who promised to put his vast knowledge to the National Police Service.
Abdallah Mwatsefu Komesha, the current Acting
Deputy Inspector General, sought to defend the position he has held for weeks
now.
In what has been noted as a stride to observe
gender equality, three female officers survived the cut; the trio of Jacinta
Muthoni, Rosemary Kuraru and Judy put their best foot forward in trying to
follow in the footsteps of Grace Kaindi, the former Deputy IG.
Other candidates include the current GSU
Commander Douglas Kanja, Director Operations Nyale Munge, David Birech, Rono
Bunei and current Kiganjo Police Academy Commandant Bruno Shioso, among others.
The commission is expected to retreat,
evaluate their competencies and forward three names to President William Ruto
who will in turn choose the next Deputy Inspector General in charge of regular
police.
