Nurses strike suspended in Homa Bay

Nurses in Homa Bay County have suspended their strike for 60 days after signing a return to work formula with the county government.

Kenya National Union of Nurses (KNUN) officials and county government officials signed a negotiated return to work formula which is set to ensure the immediate resumption of normal operations in hospitals.

The county leaders were Governor Cyprian Awiti, his deputy Hamilton Orata and County Heath Executive Prof Richard Muga.

County KNUN Executive Secretary George Bola said that the strike was suspended for 60 days as they wait for the implementation of some of their grievances.

Bola also told the government to complete the process of promoting and confirming all nurses who were qualified for higher positions and not victimize or take any disciplinary action against any nurse who participated in the three-week strike.

Homa Bay Governor Awiti , agreed to fulfill all grievances brought forward by the nurses about and promised to improve health care system in the county.

Awiti also said that the suspension of the strike came as a reprieve to the county residents who seek medical services in public facilities and had been suffering as a result of the strike.

The county boss also announced plans to hire 143 other medical workers in various health centers in the county.
