The Kenya National Union of Nurses and National Nurses’ Association of Kenya leadership, has defended Kenyatta University Teaching and Research Hospital’s leadership, after Attorney General Justin Muturi’s remarks on their eligibility.

Muturi, while responding to a question from the chair of Parliamentary Public Investment Committee Wamboka Wanami on Wednesday, stated that the Chief Executive Officer of such an institution should be a medical doctor and not a nurse.

Speaking at Kenyatta Hospital, National Nurses Association president Collins Otieno expressed dissatisfaction, stating that the sitting CEO Ahmed Dagane is a nurse, who is competent and in good standing.

“The emerging occurrence at KUTRH is aimed at sacking the CEO because he is a nurse and not a doctor. It is not only a loss and a shame to the individual but also to all nurses in Kenya and globally,” he said.

“It is a big shame to all non-doctors, health workers. It portrays the inherent nature of how our leaders view nurses and midwives,” he continued.

The nurse’s leadership demanded an apology from the Attorney General and MP Wamboka, and called on all leaders to recognize the vital role played by midwives and nurses.

Seth Panyako, the Secretary General of Kenya National Union of Nurses issued a stern warning following the issue.

“Any leader who will profile, demean and embarrass nurses we will profile you and your families…You cannot be a leader we have elected; we have entrusted you to protect our rights then  you are the one saying how can a hospital like this be managed by a nurse,” he said.

“If the health care system has collapsed, under whose hands?”
