Nyamira-based journalist Evans Nyakundi has been released from prison after spending months behind bars for contempt of court.

The reprieve came on Tuesday after Justice Winfridah Okwany allowed an application by lawyer Danstan Omari, who sought Nyakundi’s release following his incarceration for disobeying court orders barring him from publishing a particular story.

Nyakundi was sentenced to 6-months imprisonment on July 28, 2025.

In her ruling, Justice Okwany underscored the seriousness of contempt of court, terming it “a grave offense against the authority of the court that cannot be condoned.”

However, she noted that Nyakundi had already served weeks in custody and risked losing his employment with the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) if he remained imprisoned.

The judge ordered his release on condition that he pays a fine of Ksh.30,000. The case will be mentioned on October 6.
