Nyandarua County Assembly closed down after a staffer contracted COVID-19

Nyandarua County Assembly has been closed indefinitely after the confirmation of a COVID-19 case at its premises.

The Assembly Speaker Ndegwa Wahome said the Assembly is in full support of the staff who got infected saying she is on her path to recovery.

“We shall do everything possible to ensure that she gets the support, comfort and the peace that she needs at this time,” he said.

All members of the County Assembly Service Board have undergone testing and all offices  fumigated.

Members of  staff and MCAs are to be tested on Wednesday and Thursday this week, after which further directions will be issued.

The speaker also thanked the health workers in the County for their efforts of fighting pandemic, but blasted the County Executive for  its failure to pay the workers special allowances.

“We are sad that these officers have not received anything but mistreatment,” he said.

He added, “We had approved Kshs. 264 million that would cater for special allowances in the recent supplementary budget., President Uhuru Kenyatta had released Ksh.89m,  Ksh. 31m  had been assigned to the County and five million shillings more had also been provided by the National Government to give impetus and motivation to the staff.”

He said the Assembly shall convene a meeting to discuss where the money has been going to.

“This matter is grave and we cannot afford to bury our heads in the sand. Otherwise as a County, we shall be doomed since we are dealing with a storm and cannot afford to procrastinate when taking care of our health workers,” he added.
