Nyeri tycoon Stephen Wangondu Kinini to remain in custody over son’s murder case

Stephen Wangondu Kanini, the Nyeri businessman facing murder charges over the death of his son, will remain in custody until April 20, 2021.

He and 4 other accused persons will have to wait until then for determination of bail following a ruling by Lady Justice Florence Muchemi.

The five are facing charges over the murder of Daniel Mwangi on January 1 this year in Mwiyogo, Kieni West.

On Tuesday, Stephen Wangondu did not appear in court for the hearing. Citizen TV has learnt that he is in mandatory quarantine at the King’ong’o Prison.

However, his co accused James Mahinda Mwangi, Eddy Kariuki, Raphael Wachira and Geoffrey Warutumo were produced at the Nyeri High Court.

In February, residents of Mweiga took to the streets demanding justice for Wangondu’s son Daniel Mwangi.

They carried twigs, placards and pictures of the slain businessman.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), the victim’s father allegedly hired killers at a fee of Ksh.160,000.

He is also accused of facilitating his driver with Ksh.20,000 to form the team of killers.

Mwangi’s body was found laying in a pool of blood at the gate of his house in Wendiga village in the wee hours of January 1.

According to investigators, the motive behind the murder was unclear at the time since nothing had been stolen from him or his house, and even his car was still at the crime scene.
