A police officer lost both arms on Tuesday afternoon when a teargas canister exploded in his arms during the raucous Occupy Parliament protests.

According to a police report filed under 'Injury to a police officer' at the Central Police Station, a Rapid Deployment Unit (RDU) officer identified David Maina detonated a teargas canister but delayed its release, resulting in the injury.

Several videos shared online that are believed to depict the incident showed the officer engulfed in a thick cloud of smoke.

According to officers familiar with the case, both of his arms were severely injured at the wrist.

He was rushed to the Nairobi West hospital shortly after the incident for surgery.

Two other officers from the Embakasi and Tassia police posts were injured on the chest by the teargas canister and treated at Nairobi West Hospital.

The 'Occupy Parliament' protests began early Tuesday morning and quickly escalated into a riot, with police engaging Kenyans in running battles as protesters poured into the streets and alleys to fearlessly make their voices heard.

The agitation stems from Kenyans' outright rejection of the controversial Finance Bill 2024, which they now want legislators to reject due to high taxation.

Meanwhile, the National Assembly has agreed to hold a special session to debate the contentious Finance Bill 2024 before voting on it on Tuesday.

The special session was agreed upon during a Tuesday sitting, and the legislators have now scheduled an extra sitting on Thursday beginning at 9 a.m.

The motion was introduced by Majority Leader Kimani Ichungw'ah following approval by the House Business Committee.
