ODM fines MP Peter Kaluma, opponent Ksh 100,000 for fighting in public

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party has fined Homa Bay Member of Parliament, Peter Kaluma, and his opponent Washington Ogaga Ksh 100,000 each over the violence that erupted in a rally at the Homa Bay Stadium on November 27, 2016.

Mr Kaluma and Mr Ogaga engaged in a fist fight in front of the ODM Party Leader, Raila Odinga, following political differences.

In a letter signed by the ODM Executive Director, Oduor Ong’wen, the party does not tolerate acts of violence or indiscipline and as such he act could not n unpunished.

“These actions should serve to convey a clear message to ODM politicians, aspirants and members that the Party is committed to ensuring peace at its rallies and during party primaries,” read the ODM letter.

The ODM Central Committee, in its sitting on March 29, 2017, received, considered and adopted report of the National Elections Board that recommended the disciplinary action against those found to have planned or participated in the violence.

The report deduced that at the memorial service of the late Otieno Kajwang’, youth allied to politicians caused disturbances by heckling Governor Cyprian Awiti in the presence of the party leader Raila Odinga.

“The subsequent disturbances at Homa Bay Stadium (two waves of violence, heckling, throwing stones and gunshots) occurred before the arrival of the party leader,” read part of the report.

The ODM’s National Elections Board interrogated ten persons among them Governor Cyprian Awiti, Oyugi Magwanga, MP Peter Opondo Kaluma, Women Representative Gladys Wanga, Washington Ogaga, Kevin Ouma, Hamilton Orata, Enos Bolo, T.J. Kajwang, and Jack Nduru.

The party has also banned Kevin Ouma, Homa Bay Youth League Leader, from holding any appointive or elective party office for allegedly orchestrating the violence.

The party has also cautioned the ten that their subsequent involvement in any act of disruption or violence shall lead to automatic disqualification from seeking any office in the Party or with the support thereof.
