The ODM party has unveiled its list of
nominees to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA).
The Selection Committee presided by Deputy
Party Leader Wycliffe Oparanya met on Tuesday and nominated candidates who
will be considered for election to EALA.
The candidates include Winnie Odinga, who
is the daughter of ODM Party leader Raila Odinga and was at the forefront of
the Azimio la Umoja campaigns leading to the August General Election.
Another prominent nominee is Suleiman
Shahbal, who contested for the ODM party ticket in the Mombasa Governor race
but lost to incumbent Abdullswamad Nassir.
Other nominees from ODM include; Mohammed
Diriye, Timothy Bosire, Beatrice Askul and Justus Kizito.
Reports on Odinga being considered for the
EALA position emerged in October, but she denied applying.
“I have not applied for Eala nor has any
official comms come from the party. Just a disgruntled incoming CS bothered by
the girl,” she said.
On Tuesday, November 8, the joint National
Assembly and Senate committee on the nomination of EALA members said it
had received 287 applications, but the list will be trimmed before the House
votes on November 17.
Just like their political parties counterparts, Independent candidates are required to submit their applications by Wednesday, November 9.
