Ojaamong terms victory nullification a ‘rumour’, handed certificate
Busia Governor Sospeter Ojaamong has claimed that he has not yet received a letter from the chairperson of National Elections Board of the ODM Judith Pareno nullifying the Busia gubernatorial nomination results, saying he is treating media reports as rumours.
The National Elections Board of the ODM on Friday afternoon nullified the results of the Busia nomination for the seat of Governor following – what the body termed – “major irregularities in the results”.
In a statement to newsroom by ODM National Elections Board Chairperson, Judith Pareno, the Board “has made a decision to nullify the Busia gubernatorial nomination results and ordered a repeat exercise on Tuesday 25th April 2017.”
Governor Ojaamong had been controversially declared the winner of the party primaries after garnering 92,358 votes against his closest rival, Funyula Member of Parliament, Paul Otuoma’s 63,752.
Busia ODM nominations returning officer handed over provisional nomination certificate to Ojaamong, despite party nullifying the primaries over irregularities.
Below is Ms Pareno’s full statement:
“The National Elections Board of the ODM has received results of yesterday’s nominations exercise in Busia, Bungoma and Machakos Counties from respective Returning Officers.”
“The Board has since receipt of the results been scrutinizing them with the aim of making the final announcement as required by the party Constitution.”
“However, the Board has noticed major irregularities in the results for the Busia gubernatorial nomination exercise which if announced as is can cause discordance among members in the County.”
“In view of the above reasons, the Board has made a decision to nullify the Busia gubernatorial nomination results and ordered a repeat exercise on Tuesday 25th April 2017.”
“Results for the other seats remain as they were received.”
