‘OKA to announce presidential candidate in January 2022,’ says Wetangula
One Kenya Alliance (OKA) co-principal Moses
Wetangula has reaffirmed that the coalition will present its preferred
presidential candidate by the end of January 2022.
Kenyans, Wetangula says, should avoid hearsay
from the alliance’s critics who have in recent months labeled OKA leaders as
being undecided on which flag bearer to back ahead of the 2022 contest.
Wetangula’s fellow OKA co-principals are
Amani National Congress (ANC) party leader Musalia Mudavadi, Wiper’s Kalonzo
Musyoka and KANU Chairman Gideon Moi.
According to Wetangula, who is also the Ford
Kenya party leader, selecting a flag bearer is a process that requires a lot of
thought and deliberation and as such should not be hurried.
“We want to urge Kenyans to forget about the
naysayers who think that OKA is moving slowly, good coalitions and good
preparations for elections are never hurried. We have promised Kenyans that by
the end of January we shall be unveiling our OKA candidate,” he said.
Wetangula, who was addressing a press
conference at his Bungoma home on Friday, consequently revealed that Ford Kenya
is set to unveil an election board that will be tasked with overseeing the
party’s electoral processes come next year.
"We are done with the party’s National
Delegates Conference (NDC). We expelled enemies and we are now ready to
go," he stated.
The Ford Kenya boss also chimed in on the
state of the Mumias Sugar Company after Ugandan
business conglomerate Sarrai Group won the bid to lease its assets
in a bid to overturn the fortunes of the struggling miller.
“The company has been the bedrock of the
economy of Western Kenya. Its collapse hurt many people and affected our
economy immensely,” he said.
“Mumias, Kakamega and Kisumu were all
dependent on the activity of Mumias Sugar, so we welcome the new investor
coming in and we look forward to the miller boosting our economy again.”
Wetangula further urged President Uhuru
Kenyatta’s administration to address the ongoing dispute between Kenya and
neighbouring Uganda that has seen the two nations issue trade sanctions on each
other.
“We want to urge the country and the
government to quickly move and resolve the small issues we see popping up
between Uganda and Kenya in trade terms. Uganda is our number one trade partner
and we benefit immensely from each other from this trade,” said the OKA
co-principal.
He similarly lauded the Democratic Republic
of Congo (DRC) for its decision to join the East African Community (EAC) citing
that the process should be fast-tracked since it will change the region’s
economic landscape.
