Former CS Ole Lenku launches bid for Kajiado Governorship

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Joseph Ole Lenku has launched his bid to become the next governor of Kajiado County.

Ole Lenku, who has been away from the limelight since his exit from the powerful Interior Ministry cabinet docket in December 2014, has expressed confidence that he will clinch the influential seat on a Jubilee Party ticket.

The former CS left the stage rather unceremoniously when Retired Major General Joseph Nkaissery was appointed to replace him.

Ole Lenku has made the surest step in his bid to manage Kajiado, one of the richest counties in the country, and by size one of the most expansive, bordering the capital city Nairobi and the neighboring country of Tanzania.

The former CS chose to make the first step in his home area in Elang’ata Ekima in Loitoktok.

Ole Lenku believes he offers the best solution to the numerous challenges that Kajiado county faces: “My agenda is very clear, women empowerment, youth empowerment, improve our education facilities, sewerage facilities.”

He will face off with the incumbent governor David Nkedianye who was elected on an ODM ticket.

Kajiado County has five constituencies with four members of parliament having been elected on a TNA ticket, an affiliate of the Jubilee coalition. Only one Member of Parliament was elected on an opposition ODM ticket.

Ole Lenku now seems to count on the perceived strong support in the county for the Jubilee Alliance to triumph.

“We are very clear that this is a Jubilee county, there is no doubt about it. I want to call upon my brothers in Jubilee to foster unity because if we quarrel, the enemy can strike,” said the former CS.

Ole Lenku becomes the first former Cabinet Secretary to officially launch his bid for governorship.

Other ex-ministers who have expressed similar intentions are Felix Koskei who is said to be eyeing the Nandi County gubernatorial seat, Anne Waiguru who has set her sights on the Nairobi seat, and Charity Ngilu who is touted to be eyeing the Makueni County governor’s seat.
