One killed as firearm stolen from Vihiga OCS recovered in Nairobi

A firearm that was stolen from the Officer Commanding Vihiga Police Station (OCS) on December 21, 2023 has been recovered in Mwiki located in Kasarani, Nairobi.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) the OCS was waylaid while on duty with his jericho pistol loaded with 15 rounds of ammunition stolen.

"To get the firearm, the ruthless gang had on the said date waylaid the Chief Inspector as he parked his car in Vihiga's Majengo market, descending on him with daggers and leaving him for the dead," the DCI added.

An operations team from the DCI trailed the suspects following an intelligence-led operation. An anonymous caller reported the matter after spotting a suspicious car at the KU farm in Mwiki with three men on board.

Upon approaching the said vehicle, detectives noticed that the same suspects had staged several attacks in Nairobi and later evaded arrest.

One suspected gang member was killed during a shootout. "One member of the gang was also neutralized after daring a gunfight with the DCI Operations team," detectives said.

Two of his accomplices fled the scene, making way to the nearby shopping centre. Police are pursuing the runaway suspects.

"A Nissan Note with registration number KBZ 985T which the suspects were using was impounded alongside other exhibits," the DCI added.

The suspect's body was taken to the City Mortuary pending identification.
