The National Authority for the Campaign Against Alcohol and Drug Abuse (NACADA) early Saturday morning raided a major illicit alcohol den in Soweto village, Kahawa West, Nairobi, destroying more than 10,000 litres of toxic Kangara.

The pre-dawn operation, carried out in collaboration with the National Government Administration Officers (NGAO) and a police unit from the Nairobi Regional security team, was part of Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen’s 100-day rapid results initiative to eradicate illicit brews nationwide.

Acting on intelligence, the multi-agency team descended on the site at 5:00 a.m., prompting the brewers to flee into the darkness and abandon their operations.

On-site, officers uncovered an extensive brewing network, seizing 30 jerricans of ready-to-sell Chang’aa and destroying vast boiling tanks and drums used for distillation to ensure the facility could not be revived. The mission concluded successfully at 8:30 a.m.

NACADA Chief Executive Officer Dr. Anthony Omerikwa commended the operation, stating:  “This crackdown is a clear signal to the peddlers of death that their days are numbered."

The Authority is working closely with multi-agency teams across the country to fully implement the CS’s directive and safeguard Kenyans from the harms of illicit and counterfeit alcohol,” said Dr. Omerikwa.

He appealed to the public to support the fight by sharing information.

“We urge every Kenyan to be our eyes and ears. Report suspicious activities to local authorities or through our toll-free 24-hour hotline, 1192. Together, we will reclaim our communities from this scourge,” he said.
