A new electricity connectivity project targeting rural households has been launched in Kakamega County, with 161 homes expected to benefit once the initiative is completed.

The project, located in Nderema village in Navakholo Constituency, is being implemented by the Rural Electrification and Renewable Energy Corporation (REREC) at a cost of Ksh.12.6 million. It aims to link the selected households to the national grid within the next two months.

The launch was presided over by President William Ruto, who reiterated the government’s commitment to extending electricity access to rural communities across the country.

Officials involved in the project say the connections will improve daily life for residents by enabling better lighting, supporting home businesses and allowing students to study under reliable electricity.

Once completed, the project could also serve additional customers in the area as more households and small enterprises apply for connections.

The Nderema initiative forms part of a larger electrification programme in Kakamega County that aims to significantly increase access to electricity. The wider plan is projected to connect over 90,000 residents at an estimated cost of Ksh.2.3 billion, with transformer installations also planned in several constituencies.

According to REREC, expanding power connectivity to rural areas remains a key step in promoting local economic growth. Electricity access is expected to benefit schools, places of worship and small businesses, while opening up opportunities for new income-generating activities within the community.

Government officials say such projects are part of ongoing efforts to ensure that development and essential services reach communities that have historically remained off the national power grid.
