Over fifty girls rescued from early marriage after undergoing FGM in West Pokot

More than fifty girls who underwent female circumcision have been rescued and taken to a rescue centre in Chepkombe, West Pokot County.

The girls were circumcised during the December holidays and were set to be married off this January by their parents.

They were rescued after news about the plans to marry them off reached officials in the area who have been in the frontline against the vice.

One of the officials has housed the children in one of her plots, with the girls now enrolled in lower primary classes as they have been out of school for a long time.

Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) is reported to be still rampant in remote areas despite awareness campaigns against the retrogressive culture.

The officials now want the relevant officials based in Nairobi to visit the area and tackle the prevalent problem of FGM.
