Owner of 5-storey building that collapsed in Ruaka to face murder charges

The owner of a five-storey building that collapsed in Ruaka Town, Kiambu County on November 17 is set to face murder charges in court.

Jenniffer Kamau was apprehended by detectives on Monday while attempting to flee the country at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).

In a statement from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Mrs Kamau is set to answer to murder charges and other offences following the death of two tenants in the tragedy. 

"Jenniffer Kamau, who was arrested as she fled the country will answer to the offences of Criminal Negligence and Murder, contrary section 203 as read with Section 204 of the Penal Code," wrote DCI.

DCI added that four other officials from the Kiambu county planning department shall also face similar charges at the Kiambu Law Courts today, Tuesday, November 22.

Meanwhile the owner of another building which collapsed in Ruiru on Monday will also be arraigned at a Ruiru court.

Stephen Ngaruiya will be answering to charges of the offence of constructing a building without requisite approvals.

The building collapsed hours after more than 100 tenants were evacuated when cracks were seen on its pillars on Sunday afternoon.
