Passengers stranded as NTSA crackdown on ‘rogue’ motorists

Hundreds of passengers enroute to Nairobi from Garissa were stranded Wednesday night after the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) conducted an impromptu crackdown along the Garissa-Nairobi highway.

The crackdown saw several trucks and buses, which had contravened NTSA travel regulations, nabbed.

According to NTSA Regional Head Mohammed Omar, the exercise was meant to apprehend rogue drivers who contravene the authority’s regulations, and ensure drivers comply with set regulations.

However, some of the drivers expressed disappointment over the matter.

“We have been standing here from 6:30AM but we have not been told anything; so far we are not aware of what is going on,” a driver said.

Omar added that the exercise would also be extended to other towns in the northern region to ensure that all motorists comply with NTSA regulations.

An average of two accidents are reported along the Garissa-Nairobi highway weekly and are mainly attributed to speeding and reckless driving.
