People negotiated fake fuel prices, making Kenya a banana republic – Senator Onyonka

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka speaking during an interview on Citizen TV on September 14, 2023.

Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka has accused unnamed persons in Kenya of causing the surge in fuel prices, which recently crossed the Ksh.200 per litre mark.

According to the legislator, some people are involved in a dubious fuel price negotiation scheme, hence the high prices at the pump.

“Look at our fuel prices. People go and negotiate a fuel price which is fake, share the commissions, then come and give us more costing on the fuel,” he remarked.

“Which discount did you get when you were negotiating? We are not children anymore. These are the issues that are making our country look like a banana republic.”

Onyonka decried the lack of transparency and accountability in various government sectors.

"Money is being stolen in the sports fund, nobody has clarity on what the government is doing with housing, and there is no retirement fund in Kenya at the moment, other than in the private sector,” Onyoka stated.

Further, the Senator said the corruption and mismanagement of public funds has led to a lack of essential services, with only a few public servants benefiting.

“People are stealing money, buying deals and houses in Karen for Ksh.290 million. If the government is not going to take control, those youths that you saw who are going to look for jobs will soon demonstrate on the streets,” he posited.

The recent increase in fuel prices by the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has attracted uproar from all corners of the nation, with a section of leaders and citizens saying the country is heading in the wrong direction.

This was also presented in a recent survey conducted by Infotrak, which revealed that 53 per cent of Kenyans believe the country is heading in the wrong direction.

The survey also revealed disappointment among supporters of President William Ruto's "bottom-up" ideology, who are dissatisfied with the government's actions.
