Pharmacy board now denies reports one person died after receiving AstraZeneca vaccine

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) has now refuted reports that one person died after taking the Oxford-AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine in Kenya.

The Board, in a statement released on Wednesday evening, termed the claim as a misreporting.

According to PPB, 279 cases of effects after immunization were reported, out of which 272 were mild.

“The Pharmacy and Poisons Board would like to clarify reports by a section of the media that one person has died after being injected with the Oxford-AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine. There was a misreporting of an Adverse Event Following Immunization (AEFI) as fatal,” read the report.

“The Board also wishes to state that out of the 279 reported cases, 272 were mild and resolved within a short period.  All reported serious AEFI are under investigations and none of them, has resulted into fatal outcomes. Indeed, the seven serious AEFI have been reported as resolved.”

An official of the board had earlier on stated that a probe had been launched following the death of a woman that occurred after she received the jab.

However, according to Dr. Peter Ikamati, Deputy Director, PER, at the PPB, the death could have been caused by a miscarriage and not necessarily the vaccine.
