Philip Ochieng annual lecture in journalism launched

The Kenya Editors Guild has launched the Philip Ochieng annual lecture on journalism.

The event, will be celebrated every second Friday of May from 2022 in honor of the late Philip Ochieng.

“Kenya Editors Guild will use this platform to promote excellence in media and journalism that Philip Ochieng stood for,” said Mr. Otieno.

He was speaking during the inaugural lecture on Monday to celebrate the professional life of the late Ochieng.

Ochieng died two weeks ago at Migori hospital at the age of 83. He had practiced journalism for over five decades.

Ochieng rose from a cab reporter scaling the heights to be a managing editor and chief editor.

He worked in both Uganda and Tanzania during the period.

Other speakers present during the inaugural lecture highlighted Ochieng’s contribution to media.

“Philip was an enigmatic and mystical figure that most of us heard of when we came to newsrooms. Philip was many things, he was intellectual and journalistic,” said Joe Ageyo, Editorial Director at Royal Media Services.

KBC Managing Director Naim Bilal said: “He was a man who influenced journalism and politics in a very significant way.”

“From his pen came thoughtful, deep and purposeful works that not only served in finesse of the English language, anchored in history and literature but also spiced with ideology and conviction,” added Ochieng Rapuro, Editor in Chief at the Standard Media Group.

Ochieng will be laid to rest on Friday, May 14, 2021 at his rural home in Awendo, Migori County.
