Photos: Post election violence in Zimbabwe as voters await results

Zimbabwe opposition leader’s spokesman Nkululeko Sibanda has said the army’s reaction in quelling violence in the capital was disproportionate and unjustified.

At least three people were killed in Harare as soldiers opened fire to disperse opposition supporters who took to the streets after the election results were announced.

They accused the ruling party of trying to rig Monday’s presidential election, witnesses said.

However, President Emmerson Mnangagwa said the violence was meant to disrupt this week’s presidential election.

According to him, the leadership of the opposition MDC party was to blame for those who were killed and injured.

“We hold the opposition MDC Alliance and its whole leadership responsible for this disturbance of national peace, which was meant to disrupt the electoral process,” Mnangagwa said.

Mnangagwa said that MDC should remove its supporters from the streets, State broadcaster ZBC.
