Police launch hunt for 3 suspects after JKUAT student stabbed to death in Juja
Police are on the hunt for three suspected
gangsters who allegedly robbed and killed a university student in Juja, Kiambu
County, in the wee hours of Tuesday morning.
The hoodlums are said to have accosted
23-year-old Joel Juma, a fourth year Industrial Chemistry student at Jomo
Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), at around 2am as he
and his girlfriend were allegedly going to borrow exam revision materials from
a colleague who lived near the his residence.
“The girlfriend had gone to visit his lover
last evening at around 6pm and found him studying for his examinations. She
prepared a meal that they shared together before they retired to bed,” the
Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said in a statement.
“However, Juma later woke up and embarked on
his books but at 2am, he asked his girlfriend to escort him to where a
classmate lived a few blocks away, to get some reference material that he
needed before morning.”
The gang of three would however descend on
the pair, with two of them physically assaulting the deceased before stabbing
him twice on the chest and stealing his phone and other valuables.
The remaining goon would focus his attention
on the lady, a law Student at Mt. Kenya University.
He would however leave her unscathed after
discovering that she was not carrying anything valuable at the time. The trio
would soon after abscond in the cover of darkness.
According to the DCI, the commotion drew the
attention of local security guards in the area who arrived at the scene and
rushed Juma and the visibly shaken lady to a nearby dispensary. Juma was
however pronounced dead on arrival.
The DCI is of the opinion that the gang could
be part of the remnants of a larger criminal entity, which had been terrorizing
residents of Kayole and Dandora.
The gang is reported to have fled the said
areas and sought sanctuary in Gachororo, Juja owing to increased activity by
law enforcement agencies in the two estates.
“Consequently, a major undercover operation, led by the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau (CRIB) as well as the Special Service Unit (SSU), has been launched in the area to completely annihilate the gang,” said DCI.
