Police at Il Bissil Town in Kajiado County on Sunday nabbed a 62-seater bus carrying smuggled goods of an unspecified value from Tanzania to Nairobi.
The 62-seater bus was found to be carrying over 90 bales of untaxed second hand clothes and electronics with three passengers on board, who police arrested.
Confirming the arrest, Kajiado County AP Commander Philemon Mboya said the three suspects would be arraigned in court on Monday, and issued a stern warning to would-be smugglers that the county authorities would not allow smuggled goods to pass through the Nairobi – Namanga Highway.
The AP boss admitted that it was unclear how the bus passed through the Namanga border without documents supporting the legality of the luggage it was ferrying.
Last week Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich admitted that the country was losing billions to corruption and leakage during revenue collection at the Kenya Revenue Authority.
The CS however noted that the issue was being addressed through the ongoing reforms at the KRA.
Earlier, President Uhuru Kenyatta had, during an event to destroy contraband goods at the coast, accused KRA officers for corruption after the taxman failed to meet its revenue collection targets.
