Police question businessman George Mwangi’s lover as probe into his murder intensifies
Detectives
from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) on Saturday visited Kieni
forest in Gatundu North, Kiambu County, where the body of Rwanda-based engineer
George Mwangi was found on Wednesday.
Detectives
also visited Mwangi’s home in Thika town to comb for more evidence. The
three-bedroom house is where his wife Gladys Chania, the prime suspect in the
gruesome murder, lived.
Police
are in pursuit of more suspects as the alleged lover Lucy Muthoni was summoned
to record a statement.
For the
second day, the residence of the late engineer Mwangi remained a scene of the
crime as police officers manned it round the clock while neighbours in the
Mang’u area went on about their business, talking in hush tones about the
incident that shocked the country.
Those who
agreed to speak to Citizen TV on camera described Mwangi as a polite man who
said a few words
"Mimi
ni mfanyibiashara hapa, huyu Mwangi anakujanga anaenda...sikumbuki ni siku gani
lakini amekuwa kama wiki moja," stated Mama Kiarie.
Charity
Wangeci on her part said: "Mwangi sijamwona wiki hii ata hiyo ingine
lakini mwezi huu alikuja. Huwa anasimamisha gari na nikimkuta ananisalimia. Ni
mtu mpole na nimemjua kama miaka ishirini kwenda mbele."
However,
fear still grips the area, and most residents declined to speak to Citizen TV
on camera. They described the politician Gladys Chania, Mwangi's wife and the
prime suspect in the gruesome murder, as a woman dreaded by neighbours.
The
neighbours say she was hardly seen in their Mang’u home where she is alleged to
have committed the murder of her husband on Tuesday this week.
Their
second home in Kimathi estate within Thika town is where she lived.
"Mwangi
ako na nyumba Mang’u na anakaa huko. Mambo ya kukaa pamoja na familia yake
siwezi jua. Pengine nimwone mchana…hii nyumba ni yake ata anajenga, "said
Charity Wangeci.
Lucy
Njeri added: "Hapa ni Gladys anaishi. Mwangi alikuwa anakuja mchana lakini
anaenda…alikuwa last week kusimamia mjengo hapa."
Crime
Scene Forensics teams from the DCI visited the area, spending close to two
hours combing through the three-bedroom house for more evidence. All the time
the family members including Mwangi's children were present.
Detectives
also visited Kieni forest where the body of the 58-year-old Rwanda-based
engineer was discovered on Wednesday.
Police
officers are in pursuit of more suspects in the murder including a farm worker
who has since gone missing.
Lucy
Muthoni, the alleged lover was summoned and questioned by police at Kamwangi
Police Station. Muthoni was a tenant at a one-storey building a few metres from
Mwangi's home.
Mwangi
who jetted back to the country from Rwanda on September 13 this year went
missing on Sunday morning at around 9am and his wife reported him missing at
Kamwangi Police Station and later that evening at Mwea police post.
His body
would be later found wrapped in a polythene bag and over 20 kilometres away in
Kieni forest.
