Police station torched as thousands protest while carrying Albert Ojwang's coffin

Albert's body was scheduled for viewing at Nyawango Primary School, but the program changed as the youths intercepted the convoy of the slain blogger approximately one kilometre from his rural home in Kokwanyo village.

At Lida shopping centre, the youth demanded that Albert's body be taken to Mawego Police Station, where he was first arrested and detained.

Albert's father pleaded with the youths to refrain from moving the body, but his plea fell on deaf ears. 

This led to a 3-hour stand-off which eventually culminated in the youth picking the coffin from the hearse and marching towards Mawego Police Station. 

Upon arrival at the station, the angry youth removed the barricades and torched the post as they demonstrated against Ojwang's murder. At the time, the police had already vacated the post. 

Speaking to Citizen TV via phone, Homa Bay County Police Commander Lawrence Koilen condemned the action by the youths, confirming that the OCS office had also been torched.

Ojwang' was arrested at his father's home last month and taken to Mawego Police Station before being transferred to Nairobi, where he died at the Central Police Station while in police custody. 

His murder highlighted the growing concerns over police brutality across the country, amid a resurgence of abduction cases in recent weeks.
