Policy Makers urged to use local Experts in war on Climate Change

In the wake of devastating floods havoc in various parts of Kenya and recent harsh drought conditions, local based climate change stakeholders and experts are proving to be valuable in combatting the crisis.

Former Malawian President Joyce Banda, who was appointed by Malawi president in her capacity as the good will ambassador of Cyclone Freddy Recovery of the Republic of Malawi in her trip to Kenya, met various Kenyan based stakeholders to get insights in efforts to get long lasting solutions to the adverse effects of Climatic Conditions in Malawi.

Even before Malawi get to terms with the March 2023 Tropical Cyclone Freddy that claimed over 600 lives, with over 500 people reported missing and properties destroyed, UNEP has once again warned of another looming disaster in Malawi.

"Today at UNEP offices,I have also been warned that we should expect another one this year, those that have the means are already seeing ,that it is going to repeat, inform of a cyclone and that we should be prepared."said Joyce while addressing Journalists in Nairobi, Kenya where she emphasized on African Countries uniting to fight the Climate Change Ghost.

Joyce Banda's was open to get expert advice from Kenya, prompting questions whether Kenyan Policy makers are maximising the use of local stakeholders and expertise resources.

Dr Mithika Mwenda, the Executive Director of Pan African Climate Justice Alliance(PACJA), said their door has always been open and is open to all African Policy Makers and they volunteer information to the willing policy makers, "I think our work as an organisation is to really provide support to our policy makers, and you know, Voluntary work you give for a recipient to take, or not to take, the work of advocacy is really about persuasion to convince them that I think we have right resources here, instead of going to look for it somewhere because I am the one who understands, the concept," he explained.

Joyce Banda, acknowledged the significance of Kenyan Local Experts and encouraged maximum and instant  use of the knowledge and information readily available to tackle adverse weather effects in Kenya."I needed fellow champions to discuss with,so that's when we asked for this opportunity to come, and discuss what they are seeing, what they are doing, what is it that we can  do together, this has been a very successful trip,"she reiterated.

During her bilateral meeting with PACJA, Joyce was added another title, 'Goodwill Ambassador for loss and damage for Africa with hope of amplifying the voice of mothers, girls and women leaders in Africa.
