Poor network coverage will not derail results transmission – IEBC

The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson, Wafula Chebukati, has reassured Kenyans of the commission’s commitment to deliver a free, fair and credible election in Tuesday’s General Election.

Speaking during a special prayers session at the Bomas of Kenya on Sunday, July 6, Chebukati said that lack of network coverage in some geographical regions will not derail electronic results transmission or the integrity of the coming elections.

“I know that there is information reaching Kenyans that some polling stations don’t have access to network coverage but our position is that should that happen, the presiding officer should move to a place with network coverage. However, I wish to stress that the Kenya Integrated Election Management System (KIEMS) gadgets will still retain the data in the event of a change of location and will continue transmitting even after this kind of scenario,” said Chebukati.

He urged Kenyans to embrace peace insisting that Kenyans can get in touch with the commission if they have any queries about the August 8 General Election.

“If any Kenyan has an issue regarding elections he can contact us, IEBC, through our hotline numbers 1527/1537/1538/1539,” added Chebukati.

However, he called upon Kenyans to ensure that the ballot papers they are issued with on Tuesday are stamped by IEBC at the back, advising voters to put each of their marked ballot papers in the right box for the different elective seats. Colors of the ballot boxes lids will be coinciding with those of the respective ballot papers in the different elective seats.

Also in attendance were IEBC Vice Chairperson, Consolata Nkatha Maina, and Commissioners Roselyne Akombe, Amb. Paul Kurgat and Margaret Mwachanya.

Kenya goes to the ballot on Tuesday, August 8.
