Power Learn Project launches initiative to combat gender disparity in African tech industry

In a bid to address the gender disparity issue within the African tech industry, the Power Learn Project (PLP), a Pan-African social impact organization, has unveiled the "Power Women in Tech Movement."

This initiative aims to unite women trailblazers, thought leaders, and change-makers from across the continent to foster innovation, nurture ideas, and forge meaningful connections.

The launch event, held at the PLP headquarters in Spring Valley, Lower Kabete, on Saturday brought together women and allies committed to reshaping the tech landscape in Africa.

With a focus on providing vital resources such as mentorship, training, funding, and advocacy platforms, the movement seeks to narrow the gender gap and create a more inclusive environment within the tech sector.

Mumbi Ndung'u, the Executive Director of the Power Learn Project, emphasized the urgency of empowering women in the tech industry.

"With only 30% of women represented in tech roles, there is a pressing need to address the gender disparity in this field," she stated. "The Power Women in Tech Movement comes at a timely moment to provide women with the support and opportunities they deserve."

Statistics reveal a stark underrepresentation of women in technical roles and leadership positions across Africa's tech ecosystem. PLP's commitment to allocating 40% of scholarships to women underscores its dedication to promoting gender diversity and inclusivity within the industry.

"We believe that by empowering women in tech, we can drive innovation, foster diversity, and create a more inclusive and equitable industry," added Ndung'u. "By providing women with access to mentorship, training, funding, and advocacy platforms, we can break down barriers and create pathways for success."

The launch event featured notable figures in the tech industry, including former CAS ICT and Youth, Nadia Ahmed, Irene Githinji, Education Engagements Lead, ADC Microsoft, Melanie Keita - CEO & Cofounder Melanin Kapital and Executive Director of Tala Annstella Mumbi.

Through fostering meaningful conversations and collaborations, the Power Women in Tech Movement aims to create tangible change within the industry, unlocking the full potential of women in technology across the continent.
