President Kenyatta in Djibouti for AMISOM Summit

President Uhuru Kenyatta has travelled to Djibouti for the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) summit.

On arrival, President Kenyatta was received by senior Djibouti Government officials and the Kenyan Embassy staff working in the African Union and IGAD led by the Kenyan Ambassador to Ethiopia Catherine Mwangi.

Other leaders attending the summit include Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamoud and host Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh.

Uganda is represented by the State Minister for Defence Gen. Jeje Odong and State Minister for Regional Affairs Philemon Mateke while the Nigerian delegation to the summit is led by Defence Minister Manor Mohammed Dan Ali.

The AMISOM summit was preceded by a ministerial meeting of Troop Contributing Countries to the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) which has been ongoing since Saturday.

In Sunday’s summit, leaders will receive recommendations from the ministerial meeting advocating for more resources for the military operations in Somalia.

Speaking on Saturday, during the ministerial meeting, African Union Commissioner for Peace and Security Smail Chergui said aggressive operations against Al Shabaab militants must be fast-tracked.

He emphasised that troops must be supported to execute their mandate with the necessary force enablers and multipliers.

The leaders are also expected to come up with strategies of ensuring proper co-ordination and working between AMISOM forces with the Federal Government of Somalia and Somali National Security Forces.

President Kenyatta is accompanied by Cabinet Secretaries Raychelle Omamo, Amina Mohammed and Chief of Defense Forces General Samson Mwathethe among other senior Government officials.

AMISOM by the African Union’s Peace and Security Council is a regional peacekeeping mission operated by the African Union with the approval of the United Nations.

The AMISOM troop contributing countries are Kenya, Djibouti, Uganda, Burundi and Ethiopian.
