A total of 120 homeowners received keys to their houses, while the remaining 100 units are still on sale through the government’s Boma Yangu portal.
Speaking during the event, Ruto said the government’s Affordable Housing Programme is being implemented across the country to expand access to formal housing and create jobs in the construction sector.
“At every corner of our country, the defining feature is the Affordable Housing Project. Some people said we will not build, others said we will hand over the houses to prominent people but here we are, the beneficiaries are local people, businessmen and businesswomen," he said.
Among the beneficiaries are five people living with disabilities.
One of them, Paul Koech Limo, who lost his leg in an accident in 2009, said he registered on the Boma Yangu platform in 2023 and began saving in 2024. He has now acquired a two-bedroom unit and plans to move in immediately.
Limo said the new house will significantly improve his living conditions, particularly because it includes a private toilet, reliable electricity, and running water.
Another beneficiary, Josephine Chekemboi, an office administrator at Kapsabet Referral Hospital, said proximity to the town centre and improved security influenced her decision to apply for a unit. She noted that commuting had previously been difficult due to her disability, especially during the rainy season.
Bethuel Limo, a Kapsabet resident and father of two who has lived with a disability since birth, also welcomed the opportunity to own a home. He said his previous residence lacked reliable water and electricity services and shared sanitation facilities.
He said he plans to move into the new home once he completes paying the monthly instalments required under the programme.
During his visit to Nandi County, the President also laid the foundation stone for the Chesumei Affordable Housing Project.
The planned development is expected to deliver 1,166 housing units in Kapsabet town. According to government plans, the project will also include community amenities such as a community centre, a basketball court, waste management facilities, and 52 commercial shops for small businesses.
The Affordable Housing Programme is one of the flagship initiatives of the government aimed at addressing Kenya’s housing deficit while generating employment in the construction industry.
