President William Ruto on Tuesday handed over keys to 180 new homeowners at the Milimani Boma Yangu Estate Phase I in Kakamega County, marking progress in the government’s push to expand access to affordable housing.

The project, implemented by the State Department for Housing and Urban Development, comprises 220 units and forms part of the broader national programme aimed at reducing the housing deficit and improving living standards.

Speaking during the ceremony, Ruto said the government remains committed to delivering decent housing across the country, regardless of income level or location. He added that the programme will continue despite criticism, citing its role in both home ownership and job creation.

“Today is a historic moment for the people of Milimani. We are handing over keys to more than 180 beneficiaries who will become homeowners. This demonstrates that the affordable housing programme is a reality. We will continue delivering these units while creating employment and supporting social infrastructure,” he said.

The President noted that the project has already created jobs for artisans, masons, surveyors, electricians and other workers.

Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga said construction of similar projects is ongoing across all 47 counties and urged Kenyans to apply for available units through the Boma Yangu platform or via the USSD code *832#, noting rising demand.

The estate includes amenities such as green spaces, street lighting, landscaped gardens, road networks, parking and other social facilities.

Ruto also laid the foundation stone for Milimani Phase II, an expanded project expected to deliver 1,891 housing units. The development will include 947 affordable units, 392 social housing units and 552 market-rate units, alongside a community centre, schools, commercial spaces and supporting infrastructure.

The second phase is scheduled for completion in December 2027 as the government accelerates implementation of its affordable housing agenda.
