Ruto's Cabinet nominees are worth more than US President Biden and his Cabinet members combined

The vetting of President William Ruto’s 24 Cabinet nominees concluded on Saturday, October 22 with the Committee on Appointments now retreating to compile a report that will be tabled in the National Assembly for debate before being forwarded to the Head of State.

As the committee took each of the nominees to task on various issues of interest during the weeklong vetting process, little-known details emerged about the men and women who are poised to sit at the helm of the country’s leadership.

One of the highlights of the vetting process would perhaps be the net worth of the Cabinet nominees.

Out of the 24 individuals, Musalia Mudavadi who has been nominated for Prime Cabinet Secretary position ranked top in terms of net worth after revealing that his fortune is valued at Ksh.4 billion, followed by Agriculture CS nominee Mithika Linturi at Ksh.1.2 billion.

The two were closely followed by Simon Chelugui, Prof. Njuguna Ndung’u and Aden Duale who placed their respective net worth at Ksh.993 million, Ksh.950 million and Ksh.871 million respectively.

Trade CS nominee Moses Kuria revealed that his net worth stands at Ksh.750 million followed by Attorney General nominee Justin Muturi (Ksh.700M), ICT CS nominee Eliud Owalo (Ksh.645M), Education CS nominee Ezekiel Machogu (Ksh.590M), Transport CS nominee Kipchumba Murkomen (Ksh.550M) and Interior CS nominee Kithure Kindiki (Ksh.544M).

Other nominees declared their net worth as follows: Davis Chirchir (Ksh.482M), Mercy Wanjau (Ksh.475M), Ababu Namwamba (Ksh.425M), Alfred Mutua (Ksh.420M), Rebecca Miano (Ksh.397M), Peninah Malonza (Ksh.300M), Alice Wahome (Ksh.218M), Florence Bore (Ksh.200M), Soipan Tuya (Ksh.156M), Salim Mvurya (Ksh.120M), and Zacharia Mwangi (Ksh.80M).

In total, the 24 Cabinet nominees have a cumulative net worth of Ksh.15 billion, which is higher than what US President Joe Biden, his Vice President Kamala Harris and cabinet secretaries are cumulatively worth.

A report published by Forbes last year shows that President Biden, VP Kamala Harris and their 15 Cabinet members are worth $118 million (approximately Ksh.14 billion) overall.

President Biden’s net worth was placed at USD 8 million (Ksh.958M) while that of Kamala Harris was at USD 7 million (Ksh.838M).

According to the report, US Attorney General Merrick Brian Garland and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen were ranked highest in terms of net worth at USD 20 million (Ksh.2 billion) followed by Secretary of State Anthony Blinken at USD 10 million (Ksh.1.2 billion).
