Primary school teacher kills son, hangs self in Homa Bay

A 35-year-old primary school teacher killed his five-year-old son before committing suicide at Nyanguu village in Homa Bay County on Monday evening.

Calvince Okello, a teacher at a primary school in Migori County, is said to have committed suicide inside a local church following suspected domestic wrangles.

According to Kothidha location chief John Omamo, the incident began on Monday when Okello left his residence with his son but failed to return home in the evening. Okello's family members, Omamo added, became concerned when the pair failed to return home as promised.

A search for the two ensued this morning, after efforts to call Okello on his mobile phone proved futile and a few moments later, his body was found dangling from the roof of a church in the village.

"I informed the police after we found Okello's body. We then mounted a search for the boy who we found murdered in a sugarcane plantation nearby the church where Okelo had hanged himself. It seems that he strangled the child," said the chief.

Homa Bay sub-county Directorate of Criminal Investigations Officer Monica Berege confirmed the incident saying they have launched investigations into the matter.

The two bodies have since been moved to Homa Bay County Referral Hospital morgue.
