Prison warden dies by suicide while on duty in Kisumu

The unnamed officer is said to have shot himself using his G3 rifle at the prison gate which he was manning, dying on the spot.

According to a police report, the officer was drunk.

It is reported that his wife came to the gate and asked him for money for food but the officer declined saying he did not have any.

Police said moments later, he was heard telling the wife to take care of their children and also to inform his mum that he will soon take his life.

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations and officers from Maseno police station visited the scene and an inquest file has been opened.

The body was moved to Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary.
