Police officers in Trans Nzoia County are probing a case where their 49-year-old colleague allegedly died by suicide on Thursday night.

The officer, since identified as Corporal Rionosia Maiywa who hails from West Pokot, was attached to Cherangany Police Station in Trans Nzoia.

Confirming the incident, Cherangany OCPD Okumu Dulo said the deceased is alleged to have shot himself in the head while in his house but did not leave behind any note detailing the reasons for his action.

According to the OCPD, the officer did not show any form of distress prior to the act and was even preparing a meal before reporting for night patrol.

“He even went to the shop, bought some eggs and was preparing ugali since his jiko was on. Someone like that maybe was not prepared to kill himself but preparing to go to work. We could never have told him to go and patrol at night if he had any problems, he never showed any signs of stress,” said Mr. Dulo.

The body of the deceased cop has since been taken to Cherangany hospital mortuary awaiting postmortem.
