  • Juliana Cherera made an unprecendented announcement on Monday, just moments before the IEBC chairperson, Wafula Chebukati declared William Ruto as president-elect
  • Flanked by three other commisioners, Cherera disowned the results as opaque, saying the last of the processes were questionable.

After casting their votes on August 9, 2022, Kenyans underwent an intense week, laden with anxiety, as they awaited the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), to announce Kenya's fifth president.

At around 18:00pm Monday evening at the Bomas of Kenya, the long wait finally ended, after IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati announced William Ruto as president-elect.

A few kilometers away, however, four IEBC commissioners made an unprecedented announcement which left Kenyans with more questions than answers.

The four; led by Irene Cherop, Justus Abonyo, Francis Wanderi and Juliana Cherera disowned the presidential election results as opaque, casting doubts on the last process before the declaration of the results.
